Oakford Lake sits in the middle of New Egypt. In the early 1900s it drew vacationers, with hotels, a theater and lakeside carnivals during the town's railroad-era resort years. The village around it today is an old-fashioned, well-kept small town with large yards, gardens and a modest downtown, still surrounded by working farmland.
New Egypt is the unincorporated village at the center of Plumsted Township and the township's business district. I've lived in Ocean County my whole life, so if a house catches your eye, call or text me and I'll tell you what that part of town is really like.
Life here follows a small-town, agricultural rhythm. Seasonal farm stands, u-pick fruit farms and the Laurita Winery events calendar fill a lot of the social calendar. New Egypt Speedway has hosted dirt-track racing and monster trucks since the 1940s. If the track is part of why you're looking, check its current status, since ownership and operating seasons have changed in recent years.
New Egypt's recreation center has four baseball fields, a football field, softball fields and a basketball court. Dining in the township is mostly a handful of family-owned restaurants, and there's basically no nightlife. Winters hit harder than on the coast, with snow and the occasional blizzard.
The village has older homes on established streets, and the farmland areas around it, including Archertown, Head of Woods and Pinehurst Estates, offer larger rural properties. Plumsted also has working horse farms and equestrian facilities along its rural roads. Right now the active listings run from a house built in 1900 to new construction finished in 2026, with several newer subdivisions in the mix. There's no lagoon or bay here. If a listing is in an age-restricted community, read its rules and association fees before you make an offer.
As of October 2026, 21 homes are listed with a New Egypt address, priced from $295,000 to $1,250,000.
This is not a shore town. Plumsted sits at Ocean County's far western edge, bordering Monmouth and Burlington counties, and getting to the beach is a long drive. Make sure that fits your plans before you assume Ocean County means coastal living.
Zoning on rural property. As a certified zoning officer, I'd confirm current zoning on any rural or farmland-adjacent property before you assume what you can build or keep on it.
Commute. No major highways run through Plumsted. You get around on county routes, including County Route 539 and County Route 528, which adds time to any trip to bigger shopping centers, airports or the shore.
School district. The Plumsted Township School District covers PreK through 12th grade in three schools: New Egypt Primary School (PreK to K), Dr. Gerald H. Woehr Elementary School (grades 1 to 6) and New Egypt High School (grades 7 to 12).

Before you buy, ask me what the drive to the shore looks like from the specific New Egypt address you're considering. That distance is the thing most buyers underestimate about this town.
