Plumsted Township, NJ: Community Guide
Local Knowledge. Shore Results. Updated October 2026Picking blueberries or strawberries at a local farm, or spending an evening at Laurita Winery for a tasting and some country line dancing, would feel out of place in the barrier-island towns to the east. In Plumsted it's normal life. This is Ocean County's westernmost township, bordering both Monmouth and Burlington counties, and in character it's about as far from a beach town as any place in this guide.
Plumsted is named for Clement Plumsted, an English Quaker granted nearly 2,700 acres here in the colonial era, land he reportedly never set foot on. What grew here over the centuries is a rural, agricultural township centered on the small village of New Egypt. It's still surrounded by working farmland, and the pace of life has changed less than almost anywhere else in the county.
I'm Matt Quinn. I was born and raised in Ocean County, and I'm raising my own family in Lacey Township. Before real estate I worked construction, served as a police officer, worked as a health inspector, and spent more than ten years as Manchester Township's Chief Code Enforcement Officer. I also hold a zoning officer certification. I've seen what's behind the walls of a lot of shore houses. I'll tell you what a town is really like, and I'll tell you if it's the wrong fit for you.

Plumsted Township at a Glance
Plumsted covers roughly 39.5 square miles at the far western edge of Ocean County. It was incorporated in 1845 from part of Jackson Township and had 8,072 residents in the 2020 census. New Egypt, an unincorporated village inside the township with a population of 2,357, is the business district and community hub.
No major highways run through Plumsted. You get around on county routes, including County Route 539 and County Route 528. That fits the township's rural character, but it also means a longer drive to bigger shopping centers, airports and the shore.
What Makes Plumsted Township Different
Landmarks: Laurita Winery hosts tastings and community events all year and gives the township an agritourism draw. New Egypt Speedway has hosted monster trucks and dirt-track racing since the 1940s. If the track is part of why you're looking, check its current status, because ownership and operating seasons have changed in recent years. Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area, nearly 13,000 acres shared with Jackson Township, offers hunting, hiking and plenty of open land. Oakford Lake, in the middle of New Egypt, was a vacation draw in the early 1900s, with hotels, a theater and lakeside carnivals during the town's railroad-era resort years.
Horse farms and equestrian character: Along with produce farms and orchards, Plumsted has working horse farms and equestrian facilities, including boarding, training and riding operations along the township's rural roads. That's why Plumsted is in my Horse Country & Equestrian Properties guide with Colts Neck and Upper Freehold. If you want horse property specifically, and farmland alone won't do, put Plumsted on your list.
Most desirable pockets: New Egypt has the clearest sense of place: an old-fashioned, well-kept small town with large yards, gardens and a modest downtown. The farmland areas around it, including Archertown, Head of Woods and Pinehurst Estates, offer larger rural properties for buyers who want land and an agricultural feel.
Defining character: Working farmland and distance, both in miles and in culture, from the shore identity that defines most of this guide. Plumsted is the most rural, agricultural township in Ocean County, and it's proud of that.
Is Plumsted Township the Right Fit for You?
Plumsted fits buyers who want rural land, bigger lots and a small-town pace, and who are comfortable living a good distance from major shopping and the shore. It suits people drawn to farming or gardening, or anyone who wants the kind of space and quiet that's getting rare closer to the coast.
It's a tough fit if your move is about shore access, nightlife, or lots of dining and shopping. Plumsted has very little of any of those, and residents say most errands and entertainment take a drive. It's also a small, tight-knit rural community. Visit in person and talk with residents to see whether the town's pace and social feel fit you.
What It's Really Like to Live in Plumsted Township
Life here follows an agricultural, small-town rhythm you won't find much elsewhere in this guide. Seasonal farm stands, u-pick fruit farms and the Laurita Winery events calendar fill a lot of the community's social life. New Egypt's recreation center anchors youth sports and family activity, with four baseball fields, a football field, softball fields and a basketball court.
Winters hit harder than on the coast. Snow and the occasional blizzard are part of the year here in a way the ocean-moderated shore towns don't feel as much. Dining in the township is mostly a handful of family-owned restaurants, and residents will tell you there's basically no nightlife.
Schools & Everyday Life
The Plumsted Township School District covers pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in three schools:
- New Egypt Primary School (PreK to K)
- Dr. Gerald H. Woehr Elementary School (grades 1 to 6, roughly 490 students)
- New Egypt High School (grades 7 to 12, roughly 509 students)
Total enrollment is around 1,150 to 1,200 students, with a low student-teacher ratio of about 12.5 to 1. That small size gives families a close-knit school experience. Look up the district's academic profile yourself, since a district this small can look different year to year.
What to Know Before Making the Move
This is not a shore town. Plumsted sits at Ocean County's far western edge, and getting to the beach is a long drive. Make sure that fits your plans before you assume Ocean County means coastal living.
Shopping and dining are limited. Residents say most shopping, dining variety and entertainment mean leaving the township. That's part of the deal with this much rural quiet.
No major highway runs through town. County routes add time to any commute or trip to a bigger commercial area. As a certified zoning officer, I'd also confirm current zoning on any rural or farmland-adjacent property before you assume what you can build or keep on it.
This is a small, close-knit community. Spend time in New Egypt and talk with residents before you commit, so you know the town's pace and social feel fit what you want.
Common Questions About Living in Plumsted Township
Is Plumsted Township near the beach?
No. It's the westernmost township in Ocean County, bordering Monmouth and Burlington counties, and it's a long drive to any shore town.
What is New Egypt?
New Egypt is the unincorporated village at the center of Plumsted Township. It's the main business district and community hub, and home to Laurita Winery and the New Egypt Speedway.

Yes. It's Ocean County's most agricultural township, with working farmland, larger lots and a small, close-knit school district.
What's the commute like from Plumsted?

A Local Perspective on Living Here
Longtime residents are attached to Plumsted's rural character: the u-pick farms, knowing your neighbors, and a pace of life that has held off the development pressure seen elsewhere in Ocean County. Because the town is so small, how much people like it depends more on personal fit than it does in bigger, more anonymous towns. Spend time here and talk to the people who live here before you rely on general reputation.
Thinking About Moving to Plumsted Township?
If you like Plumsted's rural character but want more shopping nearby or a shorter drive to the shore, look at neighboring Jackson Township. It's another inland option with room to spread out, plus a lot more development and amenities nearby.
Before you buy, ask me what the drive to the shore looks like from the specific Plumsted address you're considering. That distance is the biggest thing most buyers underestimate about this town.
