Lakehurst, NJ: Community Guide
Local Knowledge. Shore Results. Updated October 2026A walk around Lake Horicon is a normal evening in Lakehurst. It's a small, pretty lake in a borough small enough that most residents recognize each other, and this same little town is tied to the "Golden Age of Airships." Lakehurst's name is known around the world for one reason: the Hindenburg disaster of May 6, 1937. What most people outside Ocean County don't know is that the crash site is in neighboring Manchester Township, outside the Borough of Lakehurst. It's one of several small details that separate what Lakehurst is from what its name suggests.
At under one square mile and about 2,600 residents, Lakehurst is one of the smallest, most tightly bounded towns in Ocean County. It was incorporated in 1921 out of what was then Manchester Township, and it has been shaped ever since by the naval air station next door that made it famous.
I'm Matt Quinn. I was born and raised in Ocean County, and I'm raising my own family in Lacey Township. Before real estate I worked construction, served as a police officer, worked as a health inspector, and spent more than ten years as Manchester Township's Chief Code Enforcement Officer. I also hold a zoning officer certification. I've seen what's behind the walls of a lot of shore houses. I'll tell you what a town is really like, and I'll tell you if it's the wrong fit for you.

Lakehurst at a Glance
Lakehurst sits where Route 70 meets Route 37, roughly eight miles northwest of Toms River. It's entirely inland and surrounded by fish and wildlife management areas. Its biggest neighbor is Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, one of Ocean County's largest employers. The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division there supports thousands of military and civilian jobs and is a major driver of the regional economy.
The median age is around 37. That reflects a working, family-oriented population shaped by the base, which sets Lakehurst apart from the retiree-heavy towns common in this part of Ocean County.
What Makes Lakehurst Different
Landmarks: Hangar One, a National Historic Landmark completed in 1921 and one of the largest structures of its kind in the world, still stands at the naval air station. It's the town's best-known historic connection, even though it sits just across the line in Manchester Township. All four of the Navy's rigid airships, the Shenandoah, Los Angeles, Akron and Macon, were housed there at one time or another, and so was the Hindenburg. Old St. John's Church, dating to 1874 and the oldest Roman Catholic church in Ocean County, now houses the Lakehurst Historical Society Museum, with exhibits on the town's airship history.
Most desirable pockets: The streets around Lake Horicon are the borough's most scenic, and a lake is a rare feature in a town this size. The historic downtown core still has older buildings and small-town character from Lakehurst's days as a turn-of-the-century winter resort.
Defining character: Lakehurst carries far more history than its size suggests. The naval aviation story here covers the Shenandoah, the Los Angeles, the Akron, the Macon and finally the Hindenburg, all within the borough's first two decades as its own municipality.
Is Lakehurst the Right Fit for You?
Lakehurst fits buyers who want a small, affordable, close-knit borough with real history, especially anyone connected to the base through military service or civilian work. It's a practical, working-class alternative to the retirement-community-heavy towns around it, with a younger, family-oriented population.
It's a harder fit if you want shore-town amenities or lots of housing to choose from. At under a square mile, Lakehurst has limited inventory, and its identity is tied more to its military history than to any beach or bay lifestyle. One common misconception to clear up if the Hindenburg story is what draws you: the crash site and Hangar One are in Manchester Township, outside Lakehurst's borders.
What It's Really Like to Live in Lakehurst
The base shapes daily life here. A good share of residents work there or serve nearby, which gives the borough a steadier rhythm than towns that depend on seasonal tourism. Errands and shopping mean a short drive to Manchester or Toms River. Lakehurst's own downtown is historic and walkable but small.
Walking Lake Horicon is a daily habit for many residents, and locals describe it as a treat in every season, especially during fall foliage. The Lakehurst Historical Society's walking tours pass the old railroad tracks, historic homes and the lake, keeping the town's past as a railroad hub and winter resort alive.
Schools & Everyday Life
The Lakehurst School District serves local students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. High schoolers attend Manchester Township High School under a long-standing sending/receiving arrangement. That's common for a town this small, and it's worth understanding before you assume a specific school assignment.
What to Know Before Making the Move
Lakehurst is tiny, under one square mile. Housing inventory is limited, so expect a small, tightly bounded market without the range of neighborhoods you'd find in a larger township. I've inspected homes all over Ocean County, and a small, older housing stock is exactly where a careful walk-through matters most. Give it more than a quick showing.
The Hindenburg crash site is outside Lakehurst borough. It's a common misconception. The naval air station and Hangar One are within Manchester Township's boundaries, even though everyone associates them with the Lakehurst name.
High school students attend school outside the borough. Manchester Township High School serves Lakehurst's 9 to 12 students under a sending/receiving arrangement. Make sure that fits your family's expectations.
The base is a major, stabilizing economic presence. If you're connected to military service or civilian defense work, living this close is a practical advantage. For everyone else, it's part of the town's character.

A Local Perspective on Living Here
Longtime residents are proud of how much history this tiny town holds. Lakehurst once had a grand resort hotel that drew New York visitors for its winter climate, and it became world-famous for an event that, strictly speaking, happened just across its border. The Historical Society's walking tours and museum programs show a community that treats that history as part of everyday life.
Thinking About Moving to Lakehurst?
If you like Lakehurst's small scale and history but want more housing choices, look at neighboring Manchester Township. It has much more inventory, plus the actual Hindenburg site and Hangar One, with a similarly affordable, inland Ocean County profile.
Ask me to clear up the Hindenburg question before you tour. It trips up almost every buyer new to this town, and knowing what's in Lakehurst versus Manchester Township changes how you look at the whole area.
