The Elberon train station sits on Lincoln Avenue in Long Branch. In 1881, an emergency track ran from that station to the oceanfront cottage where President James Garfield was brought after he was shot, and where he died that September. Elberon is one of Long Branch's historic estate neighborhoods, with roots as a summer retreat for wealthy 19th-century New Yorkers.

I lived in Long Branch and Elberon while I was at Monmouth University. It's the only stretch of my life I haven't lived in Ocean County. If a house here catches your eye, call or text me at (609) 709-2742 and I'll tell you what that block is really like.

What It's Like to Live in Elberon

Elberon is an unincorporated section of Long Branch, so it shares the city's government, services and schools. The history is everywhere. Seven U.S. presidents summered in Long Branch in the 19th century and worshipped at the Church of the Presidents, built in 1879 and still standing. Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, with a mile-long public beach, is named for that history.

Elberon and the West End have the city's strongest historic estate character. Long Branch's busier side is Pier Village, the redeveloped oceanfront district with boardwalk dining, shopping and events. Monmouth Medical Center, a major regional employer, is in the city too.

For New York commuters, the Elberon station is on NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line, with three NJ Transit lots and no parking fee.

What to Know Before You Buy in Elberon

Flood zones. Hurricane Sandy hit Long Branch in 2012. Confirm the current flood zone for any property and price out insurance before you commit. From my construction background, I'd also confirm that any rebuild meets current flood standards instead of assuming it from the home's age or price.

Older homes. A house from 1910 can be beautiful and still need real work behind the walls. Get an independent inspection, and ask me what I see on the walkthrough.

Commute. The Elberon station puts the North Jersey Coast Line close by. Check current schedules against your own commute before you count on a time.

Schools. Elberon is served by the Long Branch Public Schools, a Pre-K through 12 district with eight schools. Look up the specific school for any address.
