Keyport, NJ: Community Guide

Local Knowledge. Shore Results. Updated October 2026

From May through October, a normal week in Keyport includes the farmers market on Front Street and a walk through the town's cluster of antique shops. Keyport has become a destination for New Jersey antique hunters, and you can cover the shops on foot in an afternoon. The "Pearl of the Bayshore" was formally established in 1870, and it has a long list of small historical claims. Keyport is credited as the birthplace of the Lazy Susan, designed by William Bedle in 1845, though that claim is disputed. It's also where Fred Astaire made his professional dance debut in 1903, at just four years old.

Keyport's economy was built on oysters. The town was once one of the world's largest oyster suppliers, until overfishing and pollution wiped out the industry in the early to mid 20th century. That history is part of the town's nickname and the Key Port name itself. The Harbor House tavern has been serving patrons since 1898.

I'm Matt Quinn. I was born and raised in Ocean County, and I went to Monmouth University, living in Long Branch and Elberon during college. Before real estate I worked construction, served as a police officer, worked as a health inspector, and spent more than ten years as Manchester Township's Chief Code Enforcement Officer. I also hold a zoning officer certification. I've seen what's behind the walls of a lot of shore houses. I'll tell you what a town is really like, and I'll tell you if it's the wrong fit for you.

Keyport at a Glance

Keyport sits on Raritan Bay in the Bayshore region, just off Garden State Parkway Exit 117. About 7,200 people live here. The town calls itself both the "Pearl of the Bayshore" and the "Gateway to the Bayshore," and locals describe it as the unofficial start of the Jersey Shore if you're driving down from North Jersey or New York.

The first thing buyers should know: Keyport is a walkable small town built around its harbor and the historic Front Street business district. It has an active downtown instead of a scattered commercial strip. Local business owners and the Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative are working to keep the revitalization going.

What Makes Keyport Different

Landmarks: The Keyport Municipal Harbor and Park is the center of waterfront life, with a marina, fishing pier and a promenade looking out over Raritan Bay. The Keyport Historical Society Museum holds more than 4,000 local artifacts. It was rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy destroyed the original building. The Keyport Fire Museum shows off antique fire engines and equipment. The Broad Street Diner has been named in statewide polls as one of New Jersey's most iconic diners.

Most desirable pockets: Homes near the historic Front Street business district are the most walkable to shops, restaurants and the waterfront. Streets closer to the Municipal Harbor and Park carry a premium for being near the water and for the views.

Defining character: Keyport is a walkable harbor town with a long maritime history. The antique shops, the old tavern and the oyster-industry roots all come from the town's actual past, so the small-town charm feels earned.

Is Keyport the Right Fit for You?

Keyport works if you want a walkable, historic Bayshore town with character: antique shopping, a working harbor, and a small but active restaurant and events scene, plus easy Garden State Parkway access. It's a good match if you like antiques, maritime history, and regular community events. The Keyport Fireman's Fair has been running since 1922, and there's also the Keyport GardenWalk and a summer concert and movie series.

It's a harder fit if you want a big commercial or entertainment district. Keyport's charm comes from its small size, so if you expect a bigger town's amenities, look elsewhere. Also research the current flood zone status of any waterfront or low-lying property, the same as in any Bayshore town in this guide.

What It's Really Like to Live in Keyport

Daily life here fits the town's walkable, harbor-centered size. The dining mix runs from New Orleans-style food at Drew's Bayshore Bistro to several authentic Mexican restaurants to sushi with a water view. Longtime staples like the Keyport Fisher still serve fresh fish and chowder. The Henry Hudson Trail runs right through town and connects Keyport to the rest of the Bayshore for walking, running and biking.

Residents describe a steady community rhythm. There are Thursday farmers markets from May through October and a full calendar of summer concerts and waterfront events. The town is small enough that longtime locals know each other, with enough dining and shopping variety to keep things interesting.

Schools & Everyday Family Life

Keyport runs its own K-12 district, Keyport Public Schools. That sets it apart from several smaller Bayshore boroughs in this guide that send their older students elsewhere. Keyport Central School covers pre-kindergarten through 8th grade with around 555 students. Keyport High School, home of the Red Raiders, covers grades 9 through 12 with roughly 370 students. Both are on Broad Street. Keyport is the receiving district in this part of the Bayshore: high schoolers from neighboring Union Beach attend Keyport High School through a sending/receiving relationship.

Weigh that local-system advantage against the test results. Recent state testing puts Keyport Central School's math proficiency around 29% and reading proficiency around 41%. Outside rankings from SchoolDigger, GreatSchools and Niche place the district in the middle-to-lower tier statewide, below Monmouth County's strongest districts. A full local K-12 system still has value, but if academics are a top factor for you, check current test scores and any recent district changes yourself.

What to Know Before Making the Move

Confirm flood zone status for waterfront and low-lying properties. As in any town on Raritan Bay, flood risk and insurance costs change a lot by address and elevation. From my construction background, I'd get an actual elevation certificate before trusting a quoted premium.

This is a small town, so inventory and commercial options are both modest. If you want big-box shopping or a large restaurant scene, plan on driving to neighboring towns.

The antique and small-business scene is active, and it follows the seasons. Some shops and restaurants may cut their hours in the off-season. If a specific business matters to you, check its current hours.
