On July 12 of that year, a shark attacked three people in this creek, miles inland from the open ocean. It killed 11-year-old Lester Stillwell and 24-year-old Stanley Fisher, who died trying to save him. The Matawan Aberdeen Historical Society still runs commemorative walking tours every July 12th.
The shark story is only part of it. Matawan is a historic Bayshore commuter borough. It's a harder fit if you want to live on the ocean or the bay. Matawan is a Bayshore commuter town. The closest beaches are in Sea Bright, about a 30-minute drive. Also check whether a property is in Matawan borough or Aberdeen Township, because the two towns' borders interlock in an unusual way.
What It's Really Like to Live in Matawan
Daily life here is practical and built around the commute. You're a short walk or drive from the Aberdeen-Matawan station. Downtown has a good variety of food: Park Place Diner with its old-time feel, Maloney's Pub & Grill, Hyderabad Spice for Indian food and West Lake for traditional Chinese dim sum. Aberdeen Town Square Center, just over the border, adds more shopping and dining.
