The Actual Tradeoff
These two towns share a border and a lot of the same water. The difference is how much you want in town.
Stafford has it. Stafford Square Mall, the Manahawkin Flea Market, and the national stores along Routes 72 and 9 are all here, and LBI is one bridge away. You can live on a Beach Haven West lagoon with a boat out back, or on a suburban street in Ocean Acres. The cost is summer traffic. Every car headed for the island comes through Route 72, and on peak weekends it backs up.
Little Egg Harbor costs less and moves slower. Mystic Island gives you lagoon living on Great Bay, and the wooded western side is quieter still. You'll drive to Manahawkin or LBI for a lot of your shopping and nights out, so plan on that.
The tax numbers surprise people. Little Egg Harbor's rate is higher, but its average bill is about $1,100 lower than Stafford's, because homes there are valued lower on average. Check the actual tax bill on any house you're considering.
