Or it's a walk past the South Street house where he lived through high school. His earlier childhood home on Randolph Street is gone. The site is now the St. Rose of Lima Church parking lot. Freehold Borough really is "My Hometown." The 1984 song is about this town, and it mentions the closing of the Karagheusian Rug Mill, where Springsteen's father worked. That closing is a big part of Freehold's own economic history too.
There's a lot more to Freehold than one famous resident. This is the Monmouth County seat, and the town has serious Revolutionary War history. The Battle of Monmouth, one of the largest battles of the war, was fought on the surrounding fields in June 1778. That's where Molly Pitcher became famous, taking over her husband's cannon after he collapsed in the heat. The Monmouth County Courthouse served as George Washington's headquarters during the battle.

Freehold Borough at a Glance
Freehold Borough covers just 1.93 square miles and had 12,512 residents in the 2020 census. It's completely surrounded by the much larger Freehold Township, which makes the two one of New Jersey's 21 "doughnut town" pairs. They share a name, but they're separate municipalities with separate school districts, so which one you're buying into matters. The borough is about 35 miles south of New York City and about 16 miles inland from Asbury Park.
The borough has its own identity, separate from the bigger, more suburban township around it. You see it in the mix of local businesses and in a downtown that's rebuilding after decades of manufacturing decline.
What Makes Freehold Borough Different
Landmarks: The Monmouth County Historical Association Museum on Court Street holds colonial-era artifacts. St. Peter's Church is the oldest building in the borough. Construction started in 1771, and it was designed by Robert Smith, the architect behind Nassau Hall at Princeton. Its unfinished shell was used as a hospital during the Battle of Monmouth, and Revolutionary War veterans are buried in its churchyard. Monmouth Battlefield State Park is about 2.5 miles from downtown off Route 33. It's technically in neighboring Manalapan Township, and it hosts a re-enactment of the battle every June. Roberto's Freehold Grill, another longtime Springsteen favorite, has served breakfast and lunch since 1947, less than a mile from his boyhood home. Jersey Freeze, one more Springsteen favorite, sits just over the line in Freehold Township.
Most desirable pockets: The Victorian homes have the most historic character, and they generally run $750,000 to $1 million. More typical suburban housing, like bungalows, midcentury ranches and colonial-style homes, runs $380,000 to $750,000. Newer custom brick modern traditionals sit at the top of the market at $1.4 to $1.6 million.
Defining character: A lot of history packed into a small footprint. You've got a Revolutionary War battleground, a Victorian county seat and Bruce Springsteen's actual hometown, all in under 2 square miles.
Is Freehold Borough the Right Fit for You?
Freehold Borough works if you want a small town with a lot of history, a downtown with character, and a workable New York commute. That's about 60 to 75 minutes by car, or you can take a direct bus. Prices are lower than the coastal Monmouth towns. It suits buyers who care more about community and history than a polished "quaint downtown." Freehold's downtown took a hard hit when the rug mill closed, the one Springsteen sang about, and it rebuilt itself through restaurants and shops.
It's a harder fit if you want to be near the beach. The borough is entirely inland, about 16 miles from Asbury Park. Also confirm whether a listing is in the borough or the township. They share a name and a boundary, but the school districts are different.
What It's Really Like to Live in Freehold Borough
Daily life centers on the downtown: antique shops, taverns and a growing restaurant scene that a lot of residents call the town's biggest strength. For bigger shopping trips, the Freehold Raceway Mall is nearby. It's the third-largest mall in the state at 1.67 million square feet. Turkey Swamp Park and Monmouth Battlefield State Park are a short drive from the center of the borough when you want to get outside.
The Revolutionary War history is part of everyday life here. The Battle of Monmouth re-enactment draws crowds every June, and residents stay involved with that history year after year.
